Cogar Right-of-Way Clearing is owned and operated by Thomas Cogar, whose roots in the timber and forestry industry stretch back five generations. Beginning his career at just 19 years old, Tom built one of West Virginia’s largest logging operations, employing more than 80 workers across five crews by 1998. After 17 successful years in logging, he transitioned into right-of-way clearing in 2008, responding to changing markets and new opportunities in the Marcellus Shale region.
Since that transition, Cogar Right-of-Way Clearing has grown into an established union contractor, clearing hundreds of miles of right-of-way for pipelines, power lines, waterlines, and rail lines, along with sites for compressor stations, well pads, and wind energy projects. Today, Tom’s son Kyle carries on the family tradition, having started in the company’s shops at age 15 and worked his way through every aspect of the operation and is today the company’s Vice President.
Throughout its history, the Cogar family has placed a strong emphasis on safety, efficiency, and innovation. From pioneering the use of enclosed equipment cabs to introducing West Virginia’s first Timbco feller-buncher in 1996, the family has continually sought safer ways to work. Tom also collaborated with Rotobec to develop an excavator-mounted grapple saw, helping move workers out of hazardous ground-level operations and into the protection of equipment cabs. That commitment to finding safer, smarter ways to get the job done continues to guide Cogar Right-of-Way Clearing today.
